Classic Auto Transport | Enclosed Auto Transport

Enclosed auto transport is definitely the way to go if you are relocating a classic or exotic automobile.  However, it is not always necessary to choose this more expensive option, it really depends on the type of car you have, the distance and the time of year.  In some cases people choose this option when it is not necessary, and on the other hand, some people choose the cheaper route of going on an open auto transport trailer when they should be enclosed.

The time of the year and the weather is an important fact to consider when deciding on whether to choose enclosed auto transport or not.  During the winter months, you should factor in the amount of salt on the roads hail and other factors that can cause minor damage to your automobile.  Damage caused from acts of nature, such as a hail storm, and road debris, such as salt put on the road or dirt on the interstate, are not covered by the carrier’s insurance while your car is in transit.  They are not covered because they are unpreventable, in many circumstances, by the driver.  Now while it is rare for damage to occur like this, it is something important to consider when factoring everything in.

When you are hiring a company to handle your classic auto transport, it is important to know the basic types of trailers that are involved.  A large majority of enclosed trailers are hard sided which means your car is fully enclosed and no matter how bad the weather is, or dirt on the road, you car will come exactly as it was when the driver loaded it.  This is not the case for soft-sided carriers.  Soft-sided enclosed trucks are typically less expensive than hard-sided because the can transport more automobiles.  However, because of the soft sides, dirt can from time-to-time get inside the trailer while the trucks are on the road.  A very large majority of automobiles will be fine being transported in this manor so do not be concerned if this type of trailer arrives to load your car.  With regards to hard sided trailers there are single level and double stacked trailers.  Regardless of these types of either one will be a safe option for you.

If your car is not a high end exotic car or fully restored classic, using an open auto transport will generally be a fine option for you.  Often people are concerned about road debris leaving major damage on their car, this is extremely rare occurrence as your vehicle is behind the tractor that is pulling it.  If your car will be worth the same after the dent is removed or a small paint chip is replaced than you are safe going on an open auto transporter.

Making the right decision can often to be left to your own personal decision.  When you start getting quotes from companies ask them what they advise you to do.
